The Mother of Black Hollywood

A diva is someone who pretends to know who she is and looks fabulous doing it

~Jenifer Lewis

Bipolar Depressive Disorder is one of the many mental illnesses that is brought to the spot light when addressing mental health. Many people shy away from the topic because of shame and misinformation. Some are taught to believe that you cannot have a successful life with Bipolar. With the stigma against mental illness, we are keeping ourselves who are dealing with mental health in bondage. Gratefully, Jenifer Lewis is breaking that stereotype.

Jenifer Lewis, a dynamic actress and singer, has never been in denial about being Bipolar. Of course, she was not receptive to it when she was first diagnosed, but she never denied it. In her new best –selling book (It should be if it isn’t), she opens up about her life as a child, her path in the industry, and her battle with Bipolar which ironically play a part of each section.

As a mental health specialist and a fa of Jenifer Lewis, I was captivated by her story. I read the book in her voice and with her sass. Jenifer supplied the window for me to see how a person who looks like they have it together really does not. It showed how behaviors that people may display is due to mental illness and not because they are being careless assholes (they are just displaying the behavior).

If you ever wondered what a person with Bipolar looked like and the episodes that they go through, I suggest that you take the time to read this book. You will have a better understanding of this mental illness and will gain more respect for Jenifer Lewis.
