The Invisible Wound

“There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.”
― Laurell K. Hamilton, Mistral’s Kiss

Can you imagine minding your own business, staying in your life and then all of a sudden you are about to meet your final destination? Can you imagine that one day you are healthy and then within minutes you are in a coma and do not know if you will make it and if you do, will it be a sustainable life? Can you imagine becoming of what some may call “a miracle” by regaining your full life back only to encounter an incident that could make all of this happen again? That’s a very traumatic thought, isn’t it? Well that is exactly what Tracy Morgan is going through except it isn’t a thought: it is a reality.

Years ago, Tracy Morgan was in a tragic automobile accident. The accident caused him to be in a coma, to become a possible paraplegic, possibly not be able to live a sustainable life. Although he has physically made it through, we never looked at the fact that mentally, he may still be broken. You see, what this latest situation did to him mentally is opened up a mental wound him for that possibly could not be healed in the beginning. We often cheered about Tracy’s miraculous recovery (I am one) but it makes you wonder: did he ever mentally healed from his wounds.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder in which a person has difficulty recovering after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. It can last a few weeks, a few months, and even a few weeks. It does not have to occur consecutively. One can be living “normal” and then all of a sudden they can have an attack. When we go through a traumatic experience (no matter how big or small) it is imperative that we process it. When we choose to not process it and not deal with it, PTSD has a funny way of letting you know that it is still here and as long as you ignore it: it is here to stay. PTSD is like a wound, except there is no bandage for it. There is no blood and there are no broken bones. But there is a mental injury that needs to be healed. Even if it is never healed completely, it is important to be on a regiment to ensure that it is being taken care of.

A lot of our celebrities and athletes and have encountered some form of trauma in their life, just like you and I, they are people too. The difference with their issues and ours is that we can somehow contain ours in private where is for them, it is often time in the public for everyone to see. I hope that Tracy’s brief encounter had him to check himself mentally and to ask himself “Am I ok.”
